Sponsor a Secondary School Student

Since the founder members of Choba Primary School graduated at the end of 2015, Children of Choba has found sponsors for the most gifted of our children to attend some of the best secondary schools and colleges in Tanzania. We currently sponsor 11 Choba graduates at Rosmini and 4 at St Christina Girls' Secondary Schools in Tanga, 14 at Franciscan Girls' and 7 at Capuchin Boys' Secondary Schools in Mivumoni, Pangani District and 2 at Makongo High School in Dar es Salaam. If a child has ability, these schools will provide the education to make their dreams come true. We also support 3 students at government special schools, 8 students with boarding costs at government secondary schools in Pangani and another 8 previously sponsored students are currently making university applications.

Children of Choba also sponsors 12 Choba graduates to study vocational subjects such as Clinical Medicine, Law, Primary School Teaching, Community Development, Public Administration, Tourism and Hotel Management at various colleges, up to diploma level. In total we have supported 78 Choba graduates with secondary and tertiary education, which is 40% of the total number of Choba Primary School graduates.

To sponsor a secondary student is a major commitment - please contact us for current fees. We ask parents to pay for uniform, stationery and pocket money themselves. Sponsors are requested to commit to 6 years of funding or an absolute minimum of 4 (to O level), as in Tanzania once you have left the government system you lose your place until A level school selection. In return for the sponsorship, we try to help develop a relationship between donor and student. You will receive letters, school reports and numerous photographs and videos. Valerie maintains very close contact with the sponsored students and their schools, and is willing to give any sponsors the chance to stay with her in Choba so they can visit their student and get to know them. This sponsorship scheme is a very personal way to change the lives of these talented young people. We are extremely proud that Choba graduates (many of whom come from extremely poor village homes) are studying alongside the children of doctors, lawyers and government ministers, and often doing better!
